Volunteer Week Spotlight on Pamela Jergenson

Happy National Volunteer Week! To celebrate the occasion, CSI would like to give a resounding round of applause to all our current and past volunteers. All week, we are putting the spotlight on CSI members who go the extra mile for their colleagues and the built community at large.

Today’s spotlight is on CSI member Pamela Jergenson, CDT®, CCS®, CCCA®, BECxP, CxA+BE, CABS who volunteers as CSI Certification Committee Chair.

How did you get involved in the architecture, engineering, construction, and owner (AECO) industry, and what is your specific area of interest?
Starting in the construction industry was a bit by accident for me, answering a small “Help Wanted” ad for a cabinet shop early in my career. After several years in the residential market, I again answered another small “Help Wanted” ad for a building consultant. My career grew with experience, CSI certifications, and plenty of CEUs; developing into a Building Enclosure Consultant. During my whole career, no matter the economic climate or how bad the day, the construction industry is definitely where I belong!

How did you decide to share your time and expertise to volunteer for the benefit of other AECO professionals to help them reach their goals?
Early in my career when I was studying and taking the CSI certification exams, I was amazed by the passion and knowledge of the CSI volunteers teaching and supporting the exam candidates. With every exam I passed, I knew that I needed to, “Pay It Forward,” to the next generation like those CSI volunteers who graciously helped me. Education and encouragement of those around me is critical to passing on construction knowledge and to assist in advancing others.

What impact have other volunteers had on your career?
Volunteers have had a HUGE impact on my career. Without volunteers, I would have struggled or even given up on the certification exams. At times, I remember certain things said or taught by volunteers and realize the impact. The construction knowledge and experience that each volunteer shares probably has more impact than I—or they—will ever know.

Why do you think other members might want to consider volunteering?
Volunteering actually is selfish in that preparing to speak or teach is reinforcing your knowledge base and is strengthening your career. To become the teacher, the student must study twice (or more).

What matters most to you about being a part of this professional community?
We must all continue to work toward bettering the construction community and each other to make this industry the best possible.

Favorite book or binge-worthy TV?
I hate to admit it, but the other CSI, true crime, is what I will watch on TV.

Favorite hobbies?
I love to bead, cook, and tend to my perennials in our yard. At least two of the three can be done with snow on the ground!
