Volunteer Week Spotlight on Doyle Phillips

Happy National Volunteer Week! To celebrate the occasion, CSI would like to give a resounding round of applause to all our current and past volunteers. All week, we are putting the spotlight on CSI members who go the extra mile for their colleagues and the built community at large.

Today’s spotlight is on Doyle Phillips, EdD, CPC, FCPE, CCCA®, who volunteers as an author of the CCCA Workbook currently in development.
How did you get involved in the architecture, engineering, construction, and owner (AECO) industry, and what is your specific area of interest?
I grew up in the industry with my father being a cabinet maker and my uncle being a home builder. I began in my teens learning to build architectural millwork and hone my carpenter skills and became a master carpenter in my 20s. By the time I was in my early 20s I was a construction superintendent for a general contractor. I grew to love the built environment helping bring the owners’ and design teams’ dreams become a reality.

How did you decide to share your time and expertise to volunteer for the benefit of other AECO professionals to help them reach their goals?
I have always been a believer in helping others attain their goals. Since joining CSI in 1998 and receiving my CDT® and CCCA® in the next two years, I have worked with certification and education at the local level helping potential candidates attain their certification. I believe in lifelong learning as a necessity to be successful in any business, but especially when working in the AECO community.

Why is the work you do as a volunteer important to you?
My volunteer work is important to me because I deem nothing more valuable that passing on my knowledge to other individuals wanting to grow themselves. Our main purpose in life should be to be a servant leader and prepare others to take our place. I believe in passing things forward.

What impact have other volunteers had on your career?
Seeing the servant heart in others motivates me to be a better person on a daily basis and to strive to live my life for others.

Why do you think other members might want to consider volunteering?
I have always been told and lived by the motto that you only get out of something what you put into it. If you want to reap the benefits you need to give the effort.

What matters most to you about being a part of this professional community?
Continuing to learn from my peers and the networking of like-minded individuals that have a passion for what they do. Being able to stay on the cutting edge of the industry.

Favorite book or binge-worthy TV?
That’s a tough one. I love documentaries. They combine entertainment with some learning about interesting topics.

Favorite hobbies?
I love to be on the golf course every chance I get.
