Lynn Javoroski FCSI, Member Emeritus, CCS, CDT, LEED AP, SCIP, FCSI, CCS, recently shared this post on the CSI Connect as an example of why mock-ups matter.
- 1. We were doing a fast-track ice-cream stand at a zoo, with an incentive for getting the job done early. There were three sections with brick up to the order window frame and a counter on top of the brick. The GC had three different masons do the brickwork, and the architect waived the mock-up I had specified, deciding that speed was of the essence.
- 2. You guessed it. The three sections were all different heights - each mason did his own thing and the result looked more like a jack-o-lantern smile than an ice-cream stand.
- 3. Of course, they had to tear it all down and start over. While it was still finished early, and part of the incentive was awarded, it was for a couple of days fewer than planned by the GC. My hope is that both the GC and the architect learned an important lesson: mock-ups are good.
