MasterFormat® 2026

MasterFormat® 2026

MasterFormat® is the construction industry’s shared and standardized language for project documentation—transforming complex design concepts into clear, coordinated, and actionable information.

It is the framework relied upon across North America to organize how project requirements are described, understood, and executed. It gives every stakeholder—from specifier to contractor to manufacturer—a consistent way to communicate what is being built, how it performs, and what is required.

MasterFormat® is developed and maintained by the Constuction Specifications Institute (CSI) and Construction Specifications Canada (CSC) through the work of experienced specifiers and industry experts. Each revision deliberately refines this shared language to better reflect how work is actually performed and coordinated in an evolving industry.

MasterFormat® reduces ambiguity, aligns teams, and ensures that drawings, specifications, estimates, and product data all point to the same intent.

By moving to MasterFormat® 2026, firms can confidently classify modern projects more accurately— reducing reliance on workarounds and saving time, money and rework.

What's New in MasterFormat® 2026

The release of MasterFormat® 2026 is a significant update that introduces 2,185 new and 617 reorganized listings. It allows for greater granularity, more effective grouping of information, and less reliance on legacy classifications for modern projects.

The majority of changed content remains in the same divisions, which allows for improved clarity without disrupting the shared language the industry depends on.

Guilding Principles

The release of MasterFormat® 2026 reflects three strategic moves: increased granularity, thematic consolidation, and forward-looking alignment. In practical terms, that means more Level 3 breakdowns, clearer conceptual grouping, and stronger structural recognition of sustainability, compliance, and emerging technical domains

Details

Maintenance updates occurred in the following Divisions, and consisted mainly of title clarifications or small reorganizations:

  • Division 01 – General Requirements
  • Division 06 – Wood, Plastics & Composites
  • Division 09 – Finishes
  • Division 10 – Specialties
  • Division 26 – Electrical

Divisions experiencing noticeable expansion and were driven by changes to digital infrastructure, security systems expansion, and civil engineering construction refinement:

  • Division 28 – Electronic Safety & Security
  • Division 31 – Earthwork

Two divisions dominate the updates, and account for more than 80% of the total structural changes:

  • Division 32 – Exterior Improvements: Massive expansion of site and landscape systems
  • Division 34 – Transportation: Large‑scale restructuring for infrastructure classification

Divisions where MasterFormat® remained largely stable, requiring little structural adjustment:

  • Division 02 – Existing Conditions
  • Division 07 – Thermal & Moisture Protection
  • Division 27 – Communications
  • Division 40 – Process Integration
