Virtual Reality in Construction

This month’s Chapter Meeting was a perfect mix of honoring members and organizations for their dedication to CSI over the years and discussing how new technologies can improve the construction process today and in the future.

We started out with a CSI Chicago reception to celebrate members Scott Conwell and Kurt Moehlmann for the honors and awards they received at CONSTRUCT. Scott was elevated to Fellow and Kurt Moehlmann received the Andrew J. Drozda Mentorship Award earlier this month in Long Beach.  It was nice to recognize them back home in Chicago at the East Bank Club. The Hispanic American Construction Industry Association (HACIA) was also recognized for their support of our chapter with the 2018 Organization Certificate of Appreciation.

The reception was followed up by a “Virtual Reality In Construction” presentation by Josh Rodgers from Mortenson. Mortenson is leveraging Virtual Reality (VR) to enhance both customer outcomes and project outcomes. By using VR and other technologies, they have assisted customers with fundraising, sales, and training. By integrating in the design phase as well as construction phase, their project teams are able to make decisions faster and easier in a collaborative virtual environment.

Josh’s presentation provided attendees with:

  • A better understanding of what virtual reality is
  • How virtual reality is applied to support construction projects and customers’ business outcomes
  • Project examples and case studies of how Mortenson uses virtual reality
  • Real life virtual reality experience through an interactive session demonstration

Thank you to Josh Rodgers for taking the time to share Mortenson’s work to our group, to Tim Schubert of Mortenson for helping Josh with the VR demo so more of our guests could try out the headset, and to our tabletop presenters - BASF/Emseal, Dizal, MAPEI, and SJ Mallein.
