With more than three decades of experience in both construction and architecture, Ernesto Lassus has seen projects from every angle. But even with years of hands-on knowledge, he recognized the value of formal training and certification. After earning his CDT® in 2013, Ernesto decided to take his expertise even further by pursuing the Construction Contract Administrator (CCCA®) credential in spring 2025.

Here, Ernesto shares why certifications matter even for seasoned professionals, how he prepared for the exam, and the career benefits that came with it—from greater respect and recognition to more confidence in delivering successful projects.

Tell us about your work experience before you earned a CSI credential. And why did you choose to take the CCCA exam?
I had been in the construction industry for about fifteen years, and about seven years in the design sector, specifically architecture, before considering getting certified. I had been exposed to CSI information but didn't really give it much thought until I took a closer look at the benefits of having a certification. I learned about the CDT first. I evaluated myself and thought that it would catapult my efforts and confidence when it came to my work performance and level of competence.

How did you prepare for the CCCA certification exam?
I used all of the resources available by CSI and read all of what I could. I talked about the material to anyone who would listen.

What is the most valuable lesson you gained from earning a CCCA credential?
I learned that certification gives you the confidence you need to work more efficiently. Also, you are more aware of how things should be done, resulting in a more desirable project success and satisfied clients.

Since earning your CCCA credential, how has your career progressed?
I have gained more respect and acknowledgment. I have been given more challenges as I had demonstrated my commitment towards growth and development. This response was not only gratifying but also proved to me that earning both the CCCA and the CDT was well worth the effort.
