So, you're thinking about getting your CDT® certification? It's a big step, but definitely worth it!

We recently talked to Dylan Hopkins, who passed the CDT exam in the spring of 2024, and he shared some great advice. Dylan works in construction management and loves seeing how projects come together. Now that Dylan is CDT certified, he says he feels much more confident reading and understanding all those important construction documents. And he feels it's helpful for everyone in the construction world.

Tell us about your career and why you chose to work in this industry. And why earn a CDT certification?

I am in construction management and have previously worked for a contractor. I chose to work in this industry because I am fascinated about the building process and what it takes to successfully complete a project. My manager recommended taking the CDT exam, so based on my own interest and his encouragement, I was more than motivated to earn the certification.

How did you study or prepare for the CDT certification exam?
My manager suggested I take the prep course to be better prepared for the exam. Fortunately, my company, Kennedy Jenks, provided an internal prep course that incorporated CSI materials as well as input from many experienced personnel on how to navigate the information.

How has earning your CDT certification informed how you approach new projects, especially when interpreting and communicating construction documentation?
I am proud that I now have my CDT certification and have added it to my email signature. I think the certification helps me stand out and shows that I am extremely competent when it comes to construction documents. I am much more well versed in my understanding of the contract documents. I think the CDT certification is useful because it answers a lot of questions you may have when developing specifications and also helps interpreting construction documents in general.
