Portelli.jpgThe Construction Pro Spotlight is a fun way for construction industry professionals to share a little information about their career and interests, and connect with colleagues and friends

In this new spotlight, meet Charles Portelli, AIA, RIBA, CDT. There is also a link at the bottom of the page for you to put the spotlight on yourself!

Describe your affiliation with CSI and how it has impacted you, both personally and professionally?

I received my CDT certification in May of 2018. I have attended a number of the CDT prep sessions that were given by various CDT members. Both from a personal and professional perspective, preparing for the CDT exam helped me understand better construction documents, the format of specifications, and details about various project delivery methods, all of which help me better understand the role of an architect and scope of responsibilities. Preparation for the CDT gave me a more in-depth understanding then from the study materials in the ARE's

What is the construction industry’s biggest challenge?

From my perspective, the challenges in the construction space are:

  • - Adaptation of technology to track the supply chain of materials and assemblies for various projects.
  • - Utilization of CNC technology for fabrication
  • - Using BIM sources that are closed data silos. Being able to have a BIM deliverable where information (schedules, quantities, bill of materials, profiles, etc) can easily be extracted
  • - Better tracking of project completion / progress via 3D

What is the coolest project you’ve ever worked on, or are working on now?

111 Murray street by KPF, Lucas Museum by MAD architects.

Who in the industry would you like to see in a Construction Pro Spotlight, and why?

I don't have a specific name in mind but hearing from contractors and facade fabricators who have worked on projects by Zaha Hadid Architects, Santiago Calatrava, and Frank Gehry.  All of these architects produce quite intricate projects and it would be great to hear some of the challenges, successes, and failures of these projects.
