Tuesday Top 3: More Bad**s Buildings

By CSI HQ posted 09-25-2018 03:22 PM

Thrillist recently posted an item highlighting "The Most Bad**s Buildings in America You've Probably Never Heard Of".

Several CSI members replied with their own favorite Bad**s Building lists on the CSI Community page, which you can read here.

Loretta Sheridan’s Top Three have a definite old school feel. Here’s why, with links to photos:

“Going back to the referenced Thrillist link, which says, ‘the coolest buildings in America that'll stop you dead in your tracks—or better yet, that you should go out of your way to see.’ I thought about it. The Thrillist List focuses primarily on pretty new ‘starchitect’ designed structures, except for the Miami Art Deco.

So to be a little against the Thrillist grain, and looking at older structures I would maybe say...

#1) The Detroit Masonic Temple. That thing is HUGE!!! A massive limestone collegiate gothic revival thing with an enormous array of interior spaces. It is cool, in an over-the-top way. (See ‘behind-the-scenes’ photos). https://detroit.curbed.com/2017/5/17/15642538/masonic-temple-rare-photos

#2) The Washington Monument. The simple obelisk was a change from the normal monuments, which tended to be more ornate. It's impressive in size, and the simplicity is stunning. (See National Park Service photos). https://www.nps.gov/wamo/learn/photosmultimedia/photogallery.htm

#3) The Taos Pueblo. There is a lot that can be said about why this is such a cool building—the age, size (especially considering its age—more 1,000 years old), and such impressive beauty. Definitely very cool. (Taos Pueblo homepage).”
