The recently elected CSI Board of Directors began their term July 1. Here, in their own words, they discuss their history with the association, how it has benefited their professional experience, and the immediate and long-term opportunities they see for CSI in the years to come.

Meet William Sundquist, Director from the Gulf States Region

William Sundquist, CSI

Region Sales Manager

The Whitacre Greer Company

How did you first become involved with CSI, and how has that helped your professional experience grow?

As I have always said, CSI has taught me the language of construction. Graduating with a PR degree and a pilot license I always felt that I was bound for the airline industry, until I got recruited by a brick manufacturer. Not having formal school training in architecture or engineering, CSI was extremely helpful in advancing my knowledge of construction to become a better representative for my company and industry. Without CSI, I am not sure if I would have had the ability to learn and be successful.

What are the top opportunities you see for CSI?

We build the knowledge in the industry. It says so our slogan, and I believe it. Simply put, when CSI works well, the industry benefits. Our commitment and investment in education is critical for our industry. The knowledge of our members, combined with a sound platform to express this knowledge, provides a clear benefit to membership and improves the performance of our industry.

Do you have a favorite project, or work experience you would like to share?

I always say this most exciting project I worked on in my career was the renovation of Neyland Stadium at the University of Tennessee. The stadium is such an iconic symbol to all in Tennessee, and college football, so the opportunity to be a part of the project team and provide the bricks was a true honor. However, if you want to know my true love, it is the renovation of brick buildings. I have had the privilege of bringing smaller brick buildings back to life, and although they do not get the same publicity, it gives me a great sense of pride to play a role in restoring them for future generations to use and enjoy.

Is there anything else you would like your fellow members to know?

I have the honor and privilege of serving and supporting my hometown library by serving on the board. Libraries are a lot like CSI in that they are the knowledge center of every town. I would encourage everyone to use and support their local library. However, most importantly, I would like to thank the members for the opportunity to serve. I truly believe CSI has a future for our industry and I am forever grateful to be a part of this journey.

William, your 'outside-the-construction-track' education and experience can be very valuable to the Institute and your fellow Members.  We are grateful for your enthusiasm for the CSI mission, and for your willingness to serve.  And, what does having two members on the national Board say about the dynamic Chattanooga Chapter?!  Go Vols!
