This course begins with a brief history of tornadoes and their existence around the globe. Following this, attendees will 
learn about the Fujita classification scale and the tornadic events that drove the F scale’s revision to the Enhanced Fujita scale. The course will introduce the ICC-500 code and FEMAP-361 requirements to show their impact on storm shelter construction. After a short discussion about TDDs and their benefits to the health and wellness of occupants, the course will show a few examples of TDDS as an effective daylighting strategy in an ICC500/FEMAP-361 storm shelter or a safe room.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn about the history of tornadoes
  2. Gain an understanding of the original tornado classification scale and the events that led up to its eventual overhaul
  3. Examine ICC 500 and FEMA P-361 as a code and its impact on storm shelter construction
  4. Learn about tubular daylighting devices (TDDs) and benefits
  5. Examine TDDs as a Daylighting strategy in ICC 500/FEMA P-361 in storm shelters and safe rooms
  6. Review of the Minnesota State Building Code Storm Shelter requirements. 
  7. Review of building envelope requirements around storm shelters.

Continuing Education Credits will be offered to all attendees. This meeting will be a hybrid in-person and on-line presentation. The Holden Room has a maximum capacity of 35. Please sign up early. For those who are not able to attend in person a Zoom link will be provided.
