This seminar will provide the 5 hours of disabled access continuing education required for California architect license renewal in 2021 and 5 AIA, HSW CEUs. It will consist of presentations by accessibility experts and include example solutions to difficult access problems from completed projects.

Accessibility: Past and Present, by Michael Ellars, AIA, APX, CSI, CDT, LEED AP, ADAC, CASp
“Accessibility” may seem like a modern buzzword, but the concept of making the built environment accommodating to persons with disabilities has been around for quite some time. This presentation will provide a brief overview of construction-related accessibility standards and their historical evolution. Michael Ellars is an architect with DLR Group and the ADA Coordinator for Design and Construction for the LAX Automated People Mover project.
Setting Yourself up for Success: Strategies for Partnering with Authorities Having Jurisdiction in Complex Accessibility Reviews, by Nathan B. Wittasek, P.E., CFEI, LEED AP, CASp.
Learn how to set yourself up for success the next time you partner with an AHJ in solving your projects’ accessibility issues. Nate is a Principal and Vice President at Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, Inc. He has more than twenty years of experience in accessibility and brings a practical approach to the architectural and engineering community that reflects his diverse training and experiences in academia, codes consulting for both new and existing facilities, and both Federal and State of California accessibility issues.

Mike is a Certified Access Specialist and the author of the best-selling California Disabled Accessibility Guidebook (the CalDAG™). Mike has written 18 books on disabled access compliance, served as expert witness/consultant in well over 1,000 lawsuits, and has served for 23 consecutive years on the Accessibility Code Advisory Committee of the California Building Standards Commission (5 years past as Chairman). As a nationally-recognized consultant and expert in disabled accessibility compliance, Mike has given hundreds of seminars throughout the United States, and is one of the most consistently-requested experts in the industry.
