Description

The Who, How, and Why of Building Codes

Those new to the construction industry sometimes develop a relationship with building codes based on misunderstanding, benign disinterest, or annoyance. What are building codes? Where did they come from? Wouldn’t it just be easier and more efficient to just build however we want?

On Wednesday September 27 the Greater St. Louis Chapter of CSI and AIA St. Louis will present “The Who, How, and Why of Building Codes.” This course provides a foundational understanding of the basis for building codes and how they are applied in an architect’s practice. Our presenters will examine these fundamental questions:

  • Who is responsible for writing and maintaining the code?
  • How are codes reviewed, changed, and enforced?
  • Why did codes come into existence in the first place?
Our presenters are experienced architects, code experts, and specifiers.

  • Ronald Piester, AIA is Vice President, Membership/Strategic Engagement at International Code Council (ICC) and has held various executive offices within ICC since 2005. Previously Ron was Director of the Division of Building Standards and Codes in New York State's Office of Planning and Development. He is a frequent lecturer on code-related topics.
  • Ron Geren, FCSI, AIA, CCS, CCCA, CDT, CSC, SCIP is Principal/Owner at RLGA Technical Services, LLC, Scottsdale, Arizona, where he specializes in specification writing and building code consulting. Ron is author of the book "Applying the Building Code: Step-by-Step Guidance for Design and Building Professionals." Visit his website www.specsandcodes.com
  • George A. Everding, FCSI, AIA, CCS, CCCA, SCIP retired after a 40-year career as an architect, specifier, and construction administrator. He taught undergraduate and graduate level classes on specifications and building material selection. George remains active as member of Greater St. Louis Chapter of CSI and as an occasional lecturer for professional organizations.

Building codes address society’s most important concerns about public health and safety, environmental protection, and building performance. The Greater St. Louis Chapter of CSI is planning a series of additional programs on specific pertinent issues related to aspects of building codes, industry standards, and best professional practices. Follow us at www.stlouiscsi.org for more information.
For in-person and virtual attendees of the live presentation, we offer 1.0 LU/HSW awarded through AIA CES.
