Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), the junction between the natural world and city development, qualifies as Washington’s fastest-growing environment. Washington has always been a place where the land largely dictates how humans can live, and many Washingtonians' backyards are also our state's forests, expansive shrub-steppe, or sweeping grasslands. The Department of Natural Resources serves people across 39 counties, all of which contain WUI areas to some degree.

This course explores the characteristics of these liminal spaces and the implications for architects and specifiers in designing structures that meet the new fire resistance demands of these spaces.
