Topic: Rainier Square Tower Join us for a presentation on one of Seattle’s newest and most innovative high rise structures constructed in the downtown core since 1985. The new 58 story Rainer Square Tower will be the second-tallest building in Seattle and the tallest building built since 1985. The $570M Rainier Square Tower will forgo a typical high-rise core design, which wraps a steel frame around a concrete core reinforced with steel rebar. Instead, MKA will use a modular system of steel plates sandwiched with concrete. The system consists of prefabricated core modules with two steel plates that are the reinforcing steel for the core. A boundary system is set up to shape the core and the steel modules are manufactured off-site. Upon arrival, the cross-tied plates will be moved into position and filled with concrete on-site. This will be the first use of this new system, called Concrete-filled, Composite Plate Shear Wall (CF-CPSW) core, in the United States in a high-rise building, and the first in the world to be used in a high seismic zone. The new “sandwich panel system” — a steel /concrete composite core wall — is expected to shave five to seven months off the construction schedule. The new sweeping and glass clad structure is designed by Minoru Yamasaki, who designed the World Trade Center in New York City and will represent a unique and innovative design and occupy a prominent place in Seattle’s skyline. Presented By Brian G. Morgen; Ph.D., P.E., S.E., LEED AP. Brian is a Principal at MKA and a senior member of the Office and Residential Specialist Groups. His experience includes towers up to 68 stories. Brian also leads MKA’s Performance-Based Seismic Design Technical Specialist Team, focused on advancing building performance and developing and improving seismic design methodologies.
