Walk on the Wild Side: The Final Three Oregon Zoo Bond Projects

When:  Apr 9, 2019 from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM (PT)
Associated with  Portland Oregon

There are three projects remaining for the Oregon Zoo Bond: the Polar Passage, Primate Forest, and Rhino Habitat. Come join Lease Crutcher Lewis as they discuss the design and construction for these projects.

$125 million was designated in 2008 to go towards improving the Oregon Zoo, to help protect the animals’ welfare, increase access to education, and reach higher sustainability goals. Five projects have been completed. The final three projects are now under construction with completion expected in 2020.

The ground work for the Polar Passage began during the construction of Elephant Lands with a geothermal loop that takes excess heat from the polar bear habitat to warm the elephant building. This project will also include (2) outdoor habitat spaces, The Headlands and Meadow Ridge. Both will have saltwater pools for the bears to swim and play, and both create a higher elevation area where the bears can patrol like they do in the Arctic. There will also be a demonstration area that will bring the public closer than ever to the polar bears during Keeper Talks.

The primates will get upgrades to their existing exterior west habitat along with a brand new interior day room and exterior mesh habitat. The new habitats will provide higher more intricate climbing structures with endless options for configuration of their enrichment activities. We have already completed upgrades to the Red Ape habitat, which is where the chimps will remain until their new home opens up.

An expanded Rhino Habitat will provide twice as much space, up close views and a visitor encounter. New viewing areas will give visitors a closer look at these endangered animals and provide information on how to help rhinos in their native countries.

Demolition has been completed and the new construction will begin late Spring 2019.

Our presentation will cover the design and construction goals and challenges for these three amazing projects, as well as a chance to network at the Zoo with your colleagues from all disciplines within the AEC Industry.
