Windows are an integral component of the building enclosure yet are often one of the weakest links.  The complexity of building enclosure requirements and the expectations of building owners is getting more demanding.  As the separator between the interior and exterior environments, the effectiveness of the building enclosure directly impacts the durability and safety of structures and the health and well-being of the occupants.   Windows are a significant component and a potential large disruption to the continuity of the building control layers.  Do you have a grasp on the different types of window systems, how they function, and integrate into the building enclosure control layers?  In this program, we will discuss and explore the environmental forces on the building enclosure, the control layers required, and how windows integrate into the control layers to create a complete and continuous system.

This program will be a 1.5 AIA CEU presentation.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review and confirm understanding of the physics of moisture, air, and heat movement applied to the Building Enclosure.
  • Accurately define the Building Enclosure Control Layers and explore how different window types interact with these forces.
  • Examine details of different window systems, from residential-style windows to storefront and curtain wall, and how they best integrate and perform to withstand the environmental factors.
  • Discuss best practices for communicating the design intent with an eye towards constructability and interaction with different claddings.

Building Science Manager with Kraus Anderson Construction

Jack is a Licensed Architect and the Building Science Manager at Kraus Anderson Construction for building enclosure technical expertise and QA/QC activities. With 25 years in the AEC industry, Jack draws on a balanced perspective through roles such as architectural project manager, specification writer, construction administrator, building enclosure consultant, forensic investigator, owner’s representative, and construction management. He is currently a registered architect in numerous states and holds certifications in Fenestration, EIFS, WUFI, and Passive House.  He also serves as an Adjunct Instructor in the U of MN construction management program teaching building enclosure design and construction as well as on the Board of Directors for MN BEC.
