Engineered wood products are structural wood products manufactured by bonding together wood strands, veneers, lumber or other forms of wood fiber to produce a larger and integral composite unit with superior performance characteristics. These high performance building components achieve predictable and reliable performance characteristics with the efficient use of natural resources. This course explains the information shown in the APA trademark and how it relates to floor, wall, and roof construction. This course also explains APA Performance Rated Panels, span ratings, exposure durability, grades and specialty panel definitions and other common Engineered Wood Products in the industry.

    APA Rated Sheathing: Become familiar with the applications, classifications, and grades of APA Rated Sheathing.
  • Learning Objective 2:
    APA Rated Siding: Become familiar with the applications, characteristics, and categories of APA Rated Siding, including rough sawn, kerfed rough sawn, T 1-11, reverse board and batten, brush, channel groove, and overlaid siding.
  • Learning Objective 3:
    Wood structural panel grade designations: Understand grades and applications of APA Performance Rated Panels, including grade stamp terminology, grade designations, Bond Classifications, group number, Span Ratings, and specialty grades.

    APA Rated Sturd-I-Floor: Become familiar with the applications, characteristics, and Span Ratings of APA Rated Sturd-I-Floor.
Our speaker is Matt Brown, an Engineered Wood Specialist at APA – The Engineered Wood Association. He is located in Indiana and serves the greater Chicago area and surrounding region. He works to educate the wood industry on the impacts of energy efficiency and educate the raters, code officials and builders on the advantages of wood construction for energy efficiency and sustainability. Matt’s career in the construction industry began over 15 years ago as the Design and Quality manager for Accent Homes Inc., a production builder in northern Indiana. He managed many aspects of the company, from drafting and design to customer walk-through and warranty service. As a member of the Indiana Builders Association’s Code committee, he learned code development and the code development process. Matt eventually moved into the energy rating industry working as Director of Research and Development for Energy Diagnostics Inc., a rating firm that serviced Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. He was involved in code development, training, and education in all three states and soon became known as the go-to energy code guy. He became involved with energy codes at the national level and attended ICC hearings. He is now an ICC Certified Residential Energy Code Inspector/Plans Examiner, HERS Rater and Certified Green Professional (CGP).
