Guided Off-Site Tours

Come experience design from the ground up on a walking-tour of a recently completed Nashville construction project of your choosing and learn what made them unique or challenging.

The experience begins at 2:00 p.m. directly outside the Grand Hyatt with a group walk to the site, though you may arrange your own transportation to and from the site .  Additional information on where to meet-up will be provided to registrants ahead of your arrival to Nashville. 

  • Participants must register to attend
  • Registration is in addition to conference registration
  • Space is limited for each tour and participants should expect to explore both the outside and inside of the buildings. 
  • Please dress appropriately for the day’s weather conditions.

Tour #1: Capital View Development: The Gateway to Nashville Government and a New Music City

Capitol View is a multi-use urban district located in the heart of downtown Nashville, including offices, retail shops, restaurants, multi-family units, hotels and an urban activity park, with a trailhead for the Nashville Greenway.

The 32-acre centrally-located development was the largest mixed-use development in the city at the time of its inception and includes:

  • 1 million square feet of office space
  • 130,000 square feet of specialty retail and restaurants
  • 169-room Hampton Inn & Suites
  • 378 upscale multi-family apartment units
  • 5 acre activity park and community space
  • Jogging and biking trails that connect the development into the Nashville Greenway system

Surrounding the development are the famous theaters of the Nashville Arts District to the east as well as Victory Park, the Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, and several government facilities to the north.

This guided tour will highlight a number of the mixed-use construction projects that make Capital View an integral part of the Nashville Downtown experience.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the planning and design features of the development that have helped to extend the downtown experience to the area
  • Recognize how the city of Nashville is addressing the recent influx in residents through mixed-use, densely populated development
  • Identify the factors that are playing a role in how Nashville is reshaping itself to be attractive to major businesses
  • Examine how a diverse economic development plan is paving the way for increased construction project

Tour #2: Virgin Hotels Nashville: Creating Contemporary Southern Charm

Opening in late June 2020, the new Virgin Hotels Nashville offers 262 rooms, a rooftop infinity pool, two ballrooms, and a boutique café. Uniquely positioned at the highest point in the surrounding neighborhood, the upper floors of the hotel offer views of the lush surrounding environment, the nearby Vanderbilt University, and Downtown Nashville.

A partnership between BLUR Workshop and Hastings Architecture, the design of the 14-story charcoal brick building fills the narrow one-block site with bold shapes and heavy massing that draws on the brick masonry of early 20th-century manufacturing buildings surrounding Nashville. However, the interior opens up to reveal a playful and contemporary take on southern vernacular design, mixing exposed barn timbers with post-modern lighting, and infusing greenery throughout the many public spaces.

Receiving LEED Gold certification and recognized by the New York Times as an example of “the future of hotel design,” this $110+ million boutique hotel brings a completely new aesthetic to the city known for their small honky tonks and live music.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the design and construction features of the hotel that echo the transforming nature of Nashville
  • Recognize the unique site selection and integration of the buildings as it relates to the surrounding dense environment
  • Examine the various technologies and materials used to juxtapose the interior and exterior experiences
  • List the ways in which the use of space and flow within the space maintain the boutique feeling despite the scale of the overall structure
