A BIM Can't Be a Spec... Right?

Friday, September 24: 11:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Session Speaker:

Session Description:

Centralizing our building information and sharing it clearly, concisely, correctly, and completely is a continuous struggle and exploration amidst architect, engineer, construction, and owner groups. From the initial design creation through the addition of construction field constraints, explicit selected components, and even facility management and operations; data binds and connects all aspects of the project delivery process.  We seek to integrate the primary component of design intent (the building information model) with the partnered criteria found in a project manual. If we properly manifest the data in the project manual and specifications, how can we properly tie that back to the BIM and design intent? Is there a reason why we are still creating two separate, albeit sometimes somewhat connected   sets of documents and data?

Learning Objectives:

  • Differentiate between the value of a BIM and the value of specifications
  • Discuss the role of a BIM and specifications moving forward
