    From the GSR Institute Director,

I am working on my update from the board meeting last month but there are two items I would like to promote immediately.

First, retired or emeritus members must be voted on in person by the board. Our next board meeting will be the first week of February 2019. I mention this now because most like to present this transition at your year-end awards celebration. So to make that happen the board must approve in February as our next face to face meeting is not until June.

If you would like to transition a member to one of these classifications, please follow the instructions provided in this link:

    https://www.csiresources.org/communities/membership/individual-membership/emeritus

Second, the dynamic chapter program, deadline to sign up 10/21/18 and I know everyone is busy with their CSI year. I would highly encourage you to participate in the program. If need be, table some of your business and work with this program. Investing in yourself and chapter is time well spent. For further details, please follow the instruction provided in this link:

Lastly, I know the competition for your time is fierce, so I THANK YOU for your support of CSI!

Hi there - I read your message and then went to the website page noted for retired and emeritus members.  I don't see anything about voting being needed.  When I became an emeritus member last year, I just filled out the form, had the Chapter president sign it, and sent it to member services.  Has something changed?

So...the Institute Bylaws do state that ..."Members so qualified may, upon approval of their application by the
Board, be granted the status of Member Emeritus."  The website page is not consistent with this Article IX, Section 6.  I wonder why the Board would want to be involved in such a straightforward situation - either you're old enough and have been a member long enough to qualify - or you're not.

    Sheryl:

I am not a lawyer so I cannot begin to guess at your question. The only reason I let the members that elected me know this so they can get all the paper work in if they so wish to present this at a year end celebration in May or June since we have to vote on them in person. We had a chapter last year that wanted to do this and did not realize they missed their window. Was only a courtesy email from me. I know I did not answer your questions specifically and I apologize for that as I really have no clue. Just wanted to spread the work to the members that elected me.

Thanks for reaching out and THANK YOU for all your support of CSI!

Memphis Chapter sent a request for Emeritus and Retired status for a couple of our members back in February.  It did not get on the Institute board agenda, so we had to wait several months for the next Institute board meeting to approve.  In the past, when Memphis sent requests, it never had to be voted on at a Institute level board meeting.  Our members met the requirements and it was just done by Institute membership.

Aside from the fact that my membership was in expired status for nearly six mounts awaiting approval by institute board, the more important question is: Why has there been a fundamental change in institute policy usurping the authority of the local chapter to determine or verify if a member satisfies the requirements for retired or emeritus status?  It seem that the institute is now micro managing the chapters. I am just curious as to why this is occurring. Maybe there was a past board interpretation of the bylaws that was made policy by the board that addressed this issue. However the last time I checked I could no longer locate official board policy that governs the institute and all chapters. Can someone send me a link to current Institute policy or memorandum of understanding between Institute and incorporated chapters?

    All:

Sorry for the delay in my reply, I have been working the ASLA show all this weekend. Let me say my intent was to be nothing but helpful as I was briefed on what happen to Memphis last year. My goal was to let everyone know the process. I do hear some concerns and I can assure you I will take them to heart. From what I know, by laws are regulated by the state. Every state has their own twists and turns. My understanding is a lot of these requirements are because of the state that CSI is registered. However, please let me research this further and get back with you. Also, please note with me there will be no such micro managing. This is not my philosophy at all. My goal is to help members and chapters by offering support and removing any barriers that do not allow for growth.  Again, I know I did not answer specifics but please know I will process your comments. And, most importantly, THANK YOU for your support of CSI!
