There are many layers of information to consider when calculating wind uplift design pressures and the selection of a low-slope commercial roofing systems. While the process sounds straight forward, the variety of calculation methods and rating standards can present a daunting challenge for a roof system designer. For example, while building codes reference ASCE 7, there are multiple, slightly different versions, and ASCE 7-22 is on the way.

For this roundtable a roofing manufacturer’s director, experienced roofing contractor, forensic architect, and architectural specifier as moderator will discuss their experiences with selecting, specifying, and providing wind design for low-slope commercial roofing systems. Open dialogue from attendees to share experiences, lessons learned, and their approach to wind load design and selection of roofing systems is encouraged.

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Summarize the methodologies for calculating design wind loads for roofing systems.
    2. Identify the characteristics of a project that are used to determine the wind uplift pressures for the zones of the roof.
    3. Discuss the industry tools and standards available for reference to help design and select low-slope roof system based on wind uplift design pressures.
    4. Describe key parameters to include in low-slope commercial roofing system specifications and installation requirements.
    5. Investigate manufacturer and installer warranty coverage terms related to wind uplift design requirements.
