Description

Designing For The Birds

Bird mortality has been in the headlines a lot lately:
  • "3 billion fewer birds than we had in 1970." – USA Today’s September 19, 2019 article
  • "As many as a billion birds are killed crashing into buildings each year — and Chicago’s skyline is the most dangerous area in the country." – Chicago Tribune’s April 4, 2019 article
  • "Spectacular skylines can also be bird killers. Here's how a proposed Chicago ordinance is trying to help."– Chicago Tribune’s February 11, 2019 article

Chicago holds many perils for birds, it’s true - but it is also the home of ground-breaking partnerships between the building community and bird conservationists - first the Lights Out program, and now the Bird Friendly Design ordinance.

Two organizers of the Bird Friendly Chicago group will explain why Chicago’s location spells danger for migratory birds, how the proposed new ordinance can help, and what the basics of bird-friendly design are.

Presented by:

Judy Pollock, Bird Conservation Consultant, Living Habitats and President, Chicago Audubon Society

Carl Giometti, Project Architect, Perkins & Will and President, Chicago Ornithological Society

The presentation will focus on the following learning objectives:

  1. Understand the importance of addressing bird activity and migration while developing designs for Chicago buildings.
  2. Learn how the Chicago Department of Buildings (DOB) is working with local experts to develop the Bird-Friendly Building Ordinance.
  3. Discuss how this ordinance will impact Chicago’s design and construction industry.
  4. Review effective ways of designing bird-friendly buildings through use of materials, lighting, landscaping, and technology.

She still co-coordinates the Survey.  She is currently President of the Chicago Audubon Society, and is a recipient of the ABA’s 2017 Betty Petersen Award for Conservation and Community and the 2018 Partners in Flight Leadership Award. Currently she is enjoying serving the local conservation community as a bird conservation consultant with Living Habitats, a landscape architecture firm.

Carl_Giometti.jpgCarl Giometti has served as president of the Chicago Ornithological Society for the past three years and board of directors for five. Owing to his professional career as a architect, bird friendly building was a natural area for his attention. Carl served on the Mayor’s committee for the Sustainable Development Policy revision, adopted in 2017 as well as on the Bird Friendly Chicago ordinance writing committee. He is current a Project Architect with Perkins & Will.
