CSI Chicago members Jason Wilen and Thomas Kane from Klein and Hoffman will address the new Chicago building code and energy code provisions relevant to roof system design with an emphasis on what has changed from the old code. Many of these provisions are also relevant for reroofing. They will also examine how a peer review process can enhance code compliance.

Jason Wilen, AIA, CDT, RRO

Jason joined Klein & Hoffman in 2018 as a Senior Associate after 7 years with the technical services section of the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) and 18 years with architectural, forensic and roof consulting firms. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, and is a licensed architect in Illinois.

Jason provides leadership in his firm’s roof system and waterproofing work and participates in expert witness and building envelope commissioning efforts based on his career experience with roof system design, investigation of roof system failures and committee work related to building codes and standards, energy conservation design; and material standards. He is a voting member at ASTM for committees dealing with roofing, waterproofing, thermal insulation and sustainability and has authored numerous articles for local and national trade magazines.

With extensive experience Architecture, Construction, and Project Management, Tom provides comprehensive services in all project phases from programming through occupancy. His broad range of project types include multi-family residential from high-rise to mid-rise through townhouse developments, senior housing, corporate offices, retail stores, health care, hospitality/recreational, adaptive re-use and loft conversions, renovations and additions to vintage buildings including historic landmarks.

In providing many leadership roles, Tom has served as project architect directing in-house staff, consulting engineers, & specialty designers, design/build project manager including superintendent for on-site construction operations, principal-in-charge and architect of record.

His technical expertise includes detailing of envelope assemblies, integration of MEP-FP systems, life safety/security components, zoning/building code analysis, accessibility compliance, phasing and scheduling. He has designed buildings that have all typical structural systems including mid-rise frames built of cold formed steel studs/joists or wood stud wall/floor truss, and steel frame with concrete plank.

Tom consults for large scale envelope contractors, providing integrated building enclosure solutions with design-assist engineering, custom manufacturing, installation, and testing of exterior wall assemblies including new & replacement window systems, unitized & stick-built curtain wall, window wall, storefront, and rain screen cladding on large scale new construction and renovation projects.
