Virtual Mock-Up Tour of Masonry, Ventilated Rainscreen, and Tile Assemblies

This virtual tour will review and discuss details of a variety of large-scale, masonry assembly mockups including:

  1. Brick and block cavity wall drainage assemblies.
  2. Structural masonry assemblies.
  3. Back-ventilated rainscreens, including terra cotta, porcelain tile, and engineered/natural stone.

We will examine each assembly to review:

  1. Related components.
  2. Functions of the components.
  3. Interface detailing.
  4. Moisture and movement strategies.

The tour will also include training and certification mockups for critical tasks in ceramic tile installation including large format tile, membranes, shower assemblies, mud work, grouts, and gauged porcelain tile.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Investigate the functions of the components of a conventional masonry cavity wall drainage assembly.
  2. Describe air, water & thermal control layers & related components along with moisture control strategies amongst the varying masonry assemblies.
  3. Discuss the different interface detailing at enclosure locations such as foundation to wall, top-of-wall, etc.
  4. Explain the tasks critical to a successful ceramic tile installation.

Jeff Diqui holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architectural Engineering with a major in Structural Engineering from Milwaukee School of Engineering. He has more than 28 years of experience that has been focused on the building enclosure. Experience has included forensic investigations related to moisture intrusion and structural related problems, structural design, development of repair / rehabilitation designs, and construction observations. For over a decade, Jeff has been a frequent national lecturer to the AEC profession on subject matters pertaining to building enclosure performance. Jeff is actively involved with the building science and architectural / engineering professions. He is Program Director for the Building Enclosure Council (BEC) - Chicago Chapter, Technical Roundtable Committee Member of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) - Chicago Chapter, and the Transitions, Terminations & Flashings Task Group of the Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA).

In his 25 years as Director of Industry Development with International Masonry Institute (IMI), Scott Conwell has dedicated his career to advancing good design using tile, stone, and masonry materials. He is a delegate to the ANSI A108 Standards Committee for Ceramic Tile, a voting member of the Tile Council of North America Handbook Committee, and a member of the Tile, Marble & Terrazzo labor/management craft committee of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers. He has delivered over 1,000 seminars to architects, designers, and contractors all over the world. He lives in suburban Chicago with his wife and has three college-aged children.
