Specifying Resilience


What does Resilience mean for Chicago, and what are the key vulnerabilities for our region? In this Resilience-focused session Shannon Gedey, AIA, RELi AP, will provide an overview of the new RELi credit rating system and credentialing process.  Attendees will learn how this comprehensive approach will impact specifications, starting with what may be familiar from sustainability and introducing new concepts specific to RELi. Examples from real projects will demonstrate tangible resilience strategies at a variety of scales.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Define Resilience. Understand how resilience encompasses social, environmental, and economic issues, and identify key vulnerabilities for Chicago.
  2. Become familiar with the RELi rating system, including an overview of the RELi credit categories, their prerequisites and the credits generally available in each.
  3. Understand how RELi impacts construction specifications, starting with what may be familiar from sustainability and introducing new RELi concepts.
  4. Demonstrate successful resilience strategies at a variety of scales using examples from real projects.


About the Presenter:

Shannon Gedey is an Architect and founding member of the Global Resilience Task Force at Perkins+Will. Shannon has more than 10 year’s experience in the design of sustainable and resilient schools and hospitals, with a focus on innovative responses to the unique challenges and opportunities of each project site. Her most recent work includes the resilience strategy for the Northtown Branch Library, a mixed-use public library and affordable senior housing project in the city of Chicago, and the design of Hello Baby, a not-for-profit community play center in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Chicago.
