Construction Law Update:
New AIA contracts and their impact on defects, disputes and insurance.
Every ten years the AIA Contracts, the benchmark documents governing the design and construction procurement process in the U.S., are reviewed and updated to reflect changing business and risk management considerations in the industry. AIA recently released the 2017 version of the documents, with substantial changes from the 2007 version, especially in regards to the structure and content of the A201 General Conditions to the Contract for Construction. It is crucial that professionals in the design and construction industry, especially contractors and subcontractors, be aware of, and understand the implications of these significant changes to this cornerstone document. We encourage anyone who participates in the preparation or use of these essential documents, and anyone whose work is governed by the AIA Contracts to join us for this important presentation. No prior experience with CSI or knowledge of AIA Contracts is required to benefit from what will surely be an enlightening discussion.

About the Presenter: Michael Hanahan is a partner at the law firm of Schiff Hardin LLP. He specializes in construction law and the construction procurement process. Mike is regularly involved in both negotiating major construction contracts and representing clients in project-related disputes. Having received his J.D. from Loyola University Chicago School of Law in 1990, and a Bachelor’s of Architecture from Notre Dame in 1987, Mike is uniquely positioned to understand the needs of his clients in the construction law realm, be they owners, contractors, design professionals or specialty consultants. Mike shares his knowledge and experiences with the next generation of construction professionals by serving as an Adjunct Professor at the UIC School of Architecture, teaching construction law and professional practice classes at the graduate level, and is a guest lecturer on these topics at various regional universities and professional organizations. In addition to his extensive construction experience, Mike has a strong background in procurement for both government entities and private organizations. Having worked for several public bodies in Chicago on projects big and small, Mike’s understanding of requests for proposals, vendor selection, and negotiation of contracts is an asset to any entity entrusted with taxpayer dollars. In the private sector, Mike was involved in preparing and negotiating more than $2 billion worth of procurement contracts in the last three years alone.
