Case Studies: Design Strategies for Out(side)-of-the-Box Ceilings

Ceiling systems can play an integral role in the acoustic quality, lighting, energy use, air quality, wayfinding, and overall user experience of an environment. There are a vast range of ceiling systems options that vary from standard ceiling systems to complete custom fabrications; all in a wide variety of materials, textures, and colors.

This program will depict several design and construction case studies presented by members of the project design teams. The presenters will discuss the design and fabrication processes for the ceiling systems, and explain how the system selection addressed the design goals for their projects.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain the differences in design process for a standard ceiling system versus a custom fabricated ceiling system.
  2. Identify how different ceiling systems can contribute to the overall experience of a built environment.
  3. Explore the advantages and disadvantages of different types of ceiling systems.
  4. Describe how ceiling system design can contribute to a project’s sustainability goals.

Speakers:

John Rausch AIA, RID, LEED AP

Design Principal, JGMA

John Rausch is a founding member and preeminent architectural designer of JGMA. He played a crucial and decisive role in the firm’s inception, and continues to define and promote goals of combining socially significant projects with sophisticated, avant-garde design. John joined forces with Mr. Juan Moreno, President and Founder of JGMA to establish a design-focused architecture studio at the height of great economic downturn. They took the stance that sincere investigations of ideas are, in fact, intrinsically valuable to an architect’s services. This declaration continues bode well as JGMA has quickly become recognized as one of the most notable design firms in Chicago.

John’s dedication to realizing innovative designs continues to prove fruitful as well. The Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) El Centro campus, The United Neighborhood Organization (UNO) Soccer Academy, and the Instituto Health Sciences Career Academy (IHSCA) High School, all projects in which John was intimately involved, have won Design Excellence awards from the Richard H Driehaus Foundation and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Chicago.
