Foam plastic insulating sheathing (FPIS) has many applications within building envelopes that extend from the foundation to the roof. Its primary use has been to provide continuous insulation to achieve energy code compliance, as well as a means to minimize thermal bridging. However, FPIS can also play a role in many other building envelope objectives and functions. This presentation will introduce the American Chemistry Council’s Foam Sheathing Committee, explore the various applications of foam sheathing, and identify resources available to industry professionals.  It will demonstrate the use of design tools such as wall calculators for coordinating energy code compliance for thermal performance and building code compliance for moisture control. Methods of attaching and supporting cladding and fenestration will also be addressed. Guidance regarding details for appropriate use of foam sheathing as water-resistive barriers, air barriers, and foundation frost-protection will also be featured.

Session Format:  Live presentation featuring a “real time” use of the www.continuousinsulation.org website and resources.

  1. Identify potential applications for foam sheathing as part of a building enclosure.
  2. Compare foam sheathing systems to more traditional air, thermal, and moisture control enclosure systems.
  3. Explain critical detailing and transitions for foam sheathing as water-resistive barriers, air barriers, and foundation frost-protection.
  4. Describe design tools and technical resources available to support building and energy code compliance design and specifications for foam sheathing systems.

David Mann is the Senior Director for Building & Construction in the Plastics Division of the American Chemistry Council. He provides strategic, technical, and advocacy management for the Building & Construction Team, the Foam Sheathing Committee, and the North American Modern Building Alliance.

Mr. Mann received an MBA with a concentration in Energy Finance from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and a Bachelor’s Degree in Religion and Peace & Conflict Studies from Swarthmore College. He is a Certified Association Executive.
