Bigger, Lighter, Stronger: 2021 IBC Update for Exterior Adhered Porcelain Facades

Presented by:

  • Scott Conwell, FCSI, CDT, FAIA, LEED AP | International Masonry Institute (IMI)
  • John Malizzio | Ready Tile Co., LLC
  • Kathleen McGinley, CSI | MAPEI

When porcelain tile was first introduced into the International Building Code (IBC) as an adhered masonry veneer in 2009, designers embraced the opportunity to use it despite the code’s conservative size and weight restrictions. In the decade that followed, innovations in tile, setting materials, and labor development resulted in larger and lighter tiles, stronger mortar, and specialty-skilled tile installers, effecting a need to revisit the IBC requirements.

This program will examine the latest innovations in exterior tile assemblies, and the initiatives taken by industry organizations to advocate for appropriate code updates to the International Code Council. Differences between old and new code language will be discussed, and benefits and design guidelines for the use of ultra-large format tiles will be reviewed. Finally, the project team of a recently completed Chicago-area restaurant will present a case study on the design and installation of large adhered exterior tile panels.

Learning Objectives:

  • Compare the newly updated building code language requirements governing the use of exterior adhered porcelain tile to the original code requirements and examine the differences and factors leading to the code changes.
  • Analyze the latest manufacturing and installation techniques for thin, ultra-large-format gauged porcelain tile (GPT) panels, and how these GPT panels satisfy the new code requirements.
  • Explore advancements in thinset bonding mortars including the introduction of a new mortar standard, “Improved Modified Dry-Set Cement Mortar - ANSI A118.15,” and how these improved mortars contribute to the performance of exterior tile assemblies.
  • Illustrate the process of designing with large tiles and how the material performs in place from the perspectives of a local project designer, material supplier, and installer.
