Description

Preventing Pathogen Transmission Through Surface Material Specifications

Presented by: Linda Lybert, Founder and Executive Director at Healthcare Surfaces Institute

The COVID-19 pandemic has ushered in a new layer of design considerations and performance requirements for the AEC industry. The hygienic design concerns that have historically been applied to healthcare spaces have been brought to the forefront of retail, commercial, residential, educational, transportation, and institutional design.

Surface selection will play a critical role in the infection prevention and control programs being developed and implemented by Owners and facility managers. Ultimately, surfaces must be capable of being effectively cleaned and disinfected to reduce risk of harboring and spreading contagions. Unfortunately, the guidelines and testing standards that designers and specifiers will need to make effective surface selections are inconsistent and underdeveloped.

This session will provide a comprehensive approach for designers and specifiers to evaluate and select surfaces that will help mitigate the spread of infection, and review meaningful, research-based standards for healthcare surfaces performance criteria developed by the Healthcare Surfaces Institute (HSI).

Continuing Education: 1.5 AIA CES LU/HSW

 Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain the role that surfaces, or fomites, play in supporting acquisition and transmission of pathogens that may lead to infections.
  2. Present the seven different aspects of surface selection that impact how the surface may contribute to the spread of infection.
  3. Explain how the rigorous cleaning and disinfection processes can degrade and damage surfaces.
  4. Review the gaps and inconsistencies in current test methods and standards for evaluating surface cleanability and compatibility with disinfectants.
  5. Locate and clearly interpret manufacturer warnings before specifying surfaces and products.

Linda Lybert is the founder and executive director of the Healthcare Surfaces Institute. The Healthcare Surfaces Institute is a non-profit organization founded in 2015 with a 15-member advisory board comprised of multidisciplinary industry experts and thought leaders who have developed a mission to, “Reduce preventable infections through collaboration of industry, science, regulatory, and service sectors by interrupting the transmission of surface related pathogens in healthcare in support of community health.”

Linda has 20 years of experience researching and evaluating the role surfaces play in the acquisition and transmission of healthcare-acquired infections. Linda combined the findings from her many years of microbiology, physical environment, and human behavior investigations into the “Seven Aspects of Surface Selection,” a roadmap to evaluate surfaces that incorporates seven different aspects that contribute to the spread of infection.

Linda has served as a member of the Facilities Guidelines Institute (FGI) Guidelines for the Design and Construction of Healthcare Facilities Revision Committee and the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) Facility Planning Design and Construction Committee. She is an active participant with ASHE and Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), and continues to impact the healthcare industry through speaking events and her consulting practice, Healthcare Surfaces Consulting, LLC.
