Insulating Glass Unit Failures

Insulating glass units (IGUs) are a major cost during original construction and are very expensive to replace when they fail. Issues with IGU fabrication, installation into curtain walls and window systems, and facade maintenance can contribute to the failure of IGUs. This program will assist designers in establishing specification language to help prevent premature IGU failures.

Learning Objectives:
- Understand typical IGU components, glazing systems, and expected service life.
- Review common modes of IGU failures and explore what designers can do to prevent them.
- Examine industry standards and tests to promote long-term performance of IGUs.
- Review examples of poorly performing IGUs and discuss investigative measures to identify the cause of degradation or failure.
