On The Fly: Adapting Designs And Specifications For A Pandemic

COVID-19 has had a monumental impact on architectural and engineering design and construction around the world. The AEC community has been rapidly immersed in a plethora of information and guidelines to implement on new work, but applying recommendations to work already in progress has presented unique challenges to design and construction teams.
This will be a roundtable discussion group for members of the AEC community to share how the COVID-19 pandemic affected projects that were on the drawing boards or already under construction in 2020. We will discuss changes and modifications made on the fly to address concerns regarding the spread of pathogens on job sites and in partially completed projects. We encourage attendees to bring their experiences and lessons learned to share with the group.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify primary points of concern on a job site or in an occupied building for controlling the spread of pathogens.
- Explain the process followed for implementing measures to reduce the probability of pathogen spread on a project under construction or well along in the design process.
- Compare examples of infection control strategies that were implemented in a project design or on a construction job site, and discuss the cost and schedule implications of each strategy.
- Explain lessons learned by members of the AEC community from adapting infection control strategies at their job sites and in their projects.
