PRESIDENT MESSAGE: Embracing Change For Positive Outcomes

By Brad Schwab, CSI, CDT posted 09-25-2020 12:41 PM

We are creatures of habit and if we are honest with ourselves, most of us prefer certainty, which brings predictability and comfort. What words come to mind when you hear the word “change”? Typically, the words are negative, right? Words like “fear”, “the unknown”, “anxiety “, “confusion”, and “feeling defeated” come to mind. However, there are often many positive outcomes that come from change. Transformation, growth, innovation, and advancement are a few positive things that can come from change. Learning to embrace change is a process that we are all managing more than ever right now.

Remember, you are not alone during these unprecedented times. All of your fellow CSI Chicago members are going through this monumental amount of change and are feeling the same way you do.  Don’t be afraid to reach out to your fellow members or myself for support or ideas to help you get through all of this. We typically have zero control over the changes that we face. What we can control, however, is how we react. And the good news is, if you control your reaction to change, you will find opportunities that others will miss.

Our Board and Committees are embracing the change very well and I am happy to report some positive outcomes from the last three months within our chapter:

  • Increased committee member engagement, with over 40 members actively participating in leadership positions right now.
  • Maintained our high-level educational programming offerings through implementing innovative virtual technologies and techniques which has resulted in an average of 65 registrants per virtual program.
  • Significant progress has been made in getting our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee and Future AEC Leaders Committee off the ground.

We have a number of exciting new initiatives in development for this year which are a result of embracing change.  They include an improved member onboarding process, enhanced member website experience, new member communications, plus we are not done enhancing our virtual programming. I can’t wait to see these ideas come to life over the next several months.

Stay tuned and if you have any questions or need anything please don’t hesitate to reach out.
