The CSI Chicago Foundation announcements were followed by Chicago’s Building Commissioner Judy Frydland and Deputy Commissioner Grant Ullrich's presentation which provided a much anticipated overview and update on the Department of Buildings first comprehensive Chicago Building Code update in over a half century. The overview/updates included a brief history of the Chicago Building Code, highlights of the proposed code changes and why it’s good for Chicago, the process involved with updating the code, and key changes that will occur with the code updates.

Key highlights from Judy and Grant’s presentation included:

  • The goal of the building code modernization is to better align with national building codes.  Some expected benefits of the modernization include streamlining the permitting process, enhancing public safety, and to promote energy efficiency.
  • The code modernization will be rolled out in 4 phases.  The first two sections electrical and conveyance device codes were updated in 2018.
  • Phase 2 will include among other sections the building code.  On March 13, 2019 proposed ordinance changes were submitted to City Council for approval.  Members of the design and construction community who are in support of the proposed changes can write letters to the Mayor or Building Commissioner.  City Council is scheduled to vote on the proposed code updates in April 2019.
  • Implementation of code changes will be phased starting June 1, 2019 with the energy code.  The code will be published by ICC in mid-October of 2019, and mandatory compliance with the new code is currently scheduled for August 1, 2020.
  • Helpful Resources:  Commissioner Frydland and Deputy Commission Ullich encouraged everyone to take part in the following:
