Mario Gonçalves is a professional engineer and senior building envelope consultant with over 25 years of building science experience. He was born in Venezuela, to Portuguese parents, and immigrated to Canada as a child. He speaks English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Italian. His passion for construction was the driving force behind completing degrees in Architectural Technology, Construction Management and Construction Engineering. He decided to become a member of our CSI Chicago Chapter because of his love of learning. “We never stop learning - CSI is a great forum to share and learn from others as well as network with several key players in the design and construction community.”
After working summers and week-ends as a student installing residential windows and doors, his professional career started at CLEB Building Science (now UL CLEB)performing building envelope field quality control inspections, forensic investigations, field and laboratory testing. 27 years later, his focus as Principle and global business leader is to culture thought leadership throughout the company and drive growth initiatives globally to maintain UL CLEB’s position as leaders in their field of building science. The most rewarding part of his job is working hand-in-hand with the architectural and construction community to help design and build better buildings.
The 47-story KPF designed IBM-Marathon office building in downtown Montreal is his most memorable project. This was Mario’s very first project out of school and first time on a suspended scaffolding system to perform field quality control inspections of the stick-built curtain wall system. This was also one the first high rise buildings to be built in Montreal, completed in 1992
In his down time, he spends time with his three wonderful children that give purpose and meaning to his years of hard work. He also enjoys spending time at his cottage, hunting and fishing.
“Be patient, work hard, stay determined and loyal to those who believe in you and provide you opportunity for growth. Focus on your passion, surround yourself with people you can trust and learn from, become the best at what you do.” - Mario Gonçalves
