Native New Yorker Lynn Javoroski, FCSI CCS had an interesting route to becoming a Specifier. She was issued an indirect challenge by a previous Architect who told her she could not write Division 01 specifications because they were “complicated and difficult”. Challenge accepted! This lead to a career as a Specifications Writer which she thoroughly enjoyed.
Thinking over her career, Lynn is most fond of the Harley Davidson Museum and Discovery World, both in Milwaukee. They were challenging designs, including new products, new/old materials to be used in new and different ways. These buildings are iconic in their own ways and it's fun to point to them and say “I wrote the specs for that”. She has had the opportunity to take some of her five grandkids to Discovery World and experience it through their eyes. That makes it very special.
Despite CSI membership and CDT certification being a requirement, Lynn benefitted greatly by increasing her understanding of Division 01 for large projects and of the art of Specification Writing. She attributes her ability to advance to her involvement with CSI, the relationships that grew from being a member, and increasing her knowledge of AIA documents and Specifications. Lynn encourages future industry professionals to never, ever, ever stop learning!
Now that Lynn is retired, she enjoys spending time with her five grandchildren and enjoying hobbies such as bird watching!
