Happy National Volunteer Week! To celebrate the occasion, CSI would like to give a resounding round of applause to our current and past volunteers. Throughout the week we are putting the spotlight on CSI members who go the extra mile for their colleagues and the built community at large.

Today’s spotlight is on Sandi Velleca, FCSI, CDT®, CCS®, CCCA®, SCIP, who credits volunteerism as a pathway to invaluable friendships and professional advancement.

How did you first decide to volunteer, and what is your area of expertise?

Years ago, when I first joined CSI, I attended a chapter leadership training. While there I was taken under the wing by several members of the education committee. My many years of volunteering had been on the chapter, region, and national level. Over the years, I found that my true area of expertise is with certification.

Why is the work you do as a volunteer important to you?

The future of our industry is through the knowledge and experience of our upcoming leaders. Only through the work and hours provided by all the volunteers can we pass on that knowledge.

What impact have other volunteers had on your career?

Through my many years of working with other volunteers I had the opportunity to not only make friends all over the country, but also I was also able to advance my career with a CCS® and CCCA® and become recognized as an expert in my field.

How might other AECO professionals volunteer in their community, and why might you encourage them to do so?

There are many ways AECO professionals can volunteer in their communities on both a professional and personal basis. I always encourage my counterparts to become involved.
