Women in Construction Week—How CSI Supports Success

Happy Women in Construction Week! This annual event takes place during the first full week in March to highlight the great initiatives and history of women in construction.

CSI takes pride in supporting the work that women do in the architecture, engineering, construction, and owner (AECO) community. One key resource CSI offers to support that work is by providing women—and all CSI members—with the industry’s benchmark advanced certification program to demonstrate their understanding of the entire construction process and concrete skills.

The CDT® and CCS® certification are just two ways in which AECO professionals demonstrate their knowledge of advanced construction processes. Here’s what three Women in Construction say about how earning advanced certification is helping them be successful.

“I think having the CCS lets people know I take my job seriously. Not only did I study so I can learn this material, but this is something I’m going to carry until the end of my career. So I think for me, it makes me more credible and says, “She is passionate and she cares about the career, and she cares about her work. So I’m going to invest in the technical knowledge. I think it’s like a badge of honor, that this person is a spec writer and they care about writing and being a valuable member of the project team.”

“I’ve always been thrilled by the complexity of design, from concept to the actual efforts involved in building -up anything out of “earth.” After studying architecture, I started getting interested in sustainability, and the impact of materials on human health and the eco-system. That is where I understood the importance of the specifier’s role. I also understand that it’s not enough desiring to do sustainable architecture, it requires a lot of research and contractual phases to make it real.

I chose to work in the industry because I love architecture, but I chose to focus on specifications and sustainability because I believe that all of us should be responsible for creating a positive impact with our careers.”

“I wanted to earn my CCS in order to become a more knowledgeable and dedicated specifications writer. I believe that training is needed to write specifications accurately and effectively, and as such was inclined to spend time learning. Understanding the principles of specifications allows me to develop a more coherent Project Manual and set of office masters.”
