The Construction Documents Technology (CDT®) certification provides a comprehensive program of study for anyone seeking to enhance and demonstrate knowledge of writing, interpreting, enforcingand managing construction documents. It is a valuable resource for project architects, contractors, contract administrators, material suppliers, and manufacturers’ representatives, all of whom are realizing the advantages of being Construction Documents Technologists.

Here, recently successful CDT candidate Seun Olatunbosun discuss his career in construction and shares his perspective on what it took to earn this elite certification.

Can you provide an overview of your career, and why you chose to work in this industry?

I have about seven years Architectural experience with extensive design and documentation of commercial and residential building projects. I consult with clients to determine their requirements. I coordinate preliminary architectural studies for major new structures and alterations to existing structures and site development. I have a Master’s in architecture and a certified project manager (PMP).

I chose to work in the Architecture Industry because it is a highly creative profession, with the fact that you could have something that you have designed, come to real life. As time progressed, I began to be intrigued by how buildings could affect the way we live, our life, our mood and behavior.

What prompted you to earn your CDT?

I chose to earn the CDT to have overall understanding of building construction, be able to write specs, understanding best practice, and project delivery methods and for career advancement.

How did you study/prepare for the exam?

I took Cherise Lakeside, Fall Portland CSI CDT Class 2020, and a group study with friends.

What in particular about the exam process stands out for you?

What stands out to me is the way the CSI Administrative team organized meetings to help candidates that are preparing for the CDT exam to answer any questions or concerns we might have and give a detailed explanation of the exam process. Kudos to CSI’s Matthew Fochs and Monica Occhetti.

Were there any surprising, or unexpected methods or preparation that helped you achieve success?

A few things that I can say helped me achieved success were:

  1. Cherise Lakeside Class was helpful.
  2. Regular group mee-tups, studying and practice questions with friends.
  3. I was also studying for the ARE 5.0 exam at the same time and the materials were related. Passed PcM, PjM and CE before taking the CDT Exam.

How did your professional and personal community support you?

I received professional support through webinars i.e., contracts B101, A201 from AIA. Also, I had great support from my wife and children, who allowed me to have time to study.

How do you feel this will impact your future in the industry and inform the work you do?

Great impact! I am learning new things every day; this is the key to best practice.
