Three Conversations You Should Follow on the CSI Community Page

The CSI-Connect Community page is a great resource for both experienced and fledgling construction industry professionals, providing a forum where you can ask your colleagues a question or join an existing conversation.

Here are three thought-provoking threads to follow right now.

Basis of Design

Kourtney Strong CSI, CDT, AIA, NCARB posted: On public projects we often specify a ‘Basis of Design’ product for various interior and exterior finishes that have approved equal manufacturers listed.

While typically we can get an equal in terms of technical performance, how have you addressed aesthetic equals?  Do you require custom finishes to exact match the BOD and expect the premium cost? Or do you re-select a color/texture based on manufacturer selected and assume you can adjust other finishes if needed (within standard palettes)?

Student Scholarship Essay Question

Kathryn Fuller CSI, CDT, AIA, NCARB posted: This spring, Spokane Chapter will offer scholarship monies to local college students planning to go into a construction-related field.

We have past examples in our archives; however, we want your suggestions for an essay question that students would enjoy thinking about and writing 500 - 750 words?

Spec Coordination with Div 00

Kevin O'Beirne, PE, FCSI, CCS, CCCA posted: From my perspective of working for many years as "the specs guy" at a couple large engineering firms, I've concluded that many design professionals preparing project specifications give little heed to coordinating their specs (Div 01-49) with the project's Division 00 documents.

If you're a design professional who prepares specifications, what do you do to coordinate your specs with a client’s non-standard Division 00 documents?
