How Chapters Help Grow CSI’s National Community

CSI’s local chapters provide construction industry professionals the means to network, access institutional knowledge and discover new opportunities—they also provide an introduction to the vast professional resources of CSI.

In answer to this question on the CSI Community Connect page, “What memorable experience did you have at a local Chapter meeting that made you want to join CSI?” members shared some of their personal stories.

“My memorable experience was a session conducted by several members from the Indianapolis Chapter of how to prepare ‘Good Specifications’ in 2001. They told of the history, format, and pointers of preparing good specifications.

I recently had started a new position of Technical Manager, which included specifications for an Indianapolis Architectural Firm. I decided that this session would be well worth my time.

I was so impressed with the knowledge of the presenters as how to approach specifications and how to prepare them, that I decided to attend the next Chapter Meeting where I joined CSI on the spot. Later I earned my CDT, CCS, and CCCA Certifications. To help younger professionals, I have been an instructor for the Indianapolis Chapter’s CDT, CCS, and CCCA Classes since 2006.

That session in 2001 started me on my CSI path, which I am still enjoying today.”

“I was trying to figure out how to get a product specified and had attended a session put on by Architectural Record Magazine on How to Get Your Product Specified, where Tim Kirby from the Atlanta chapter talked about the value of CSI chapters.

I went to a Los Angeles Chapter meeting, and was amazed by the number of architectural firms represented in the room. An easy way to help visitors and new members is to do self-introductions before the meeting. It gives a quick demonstration of the variety of people who are at the event.”

“I joined after my first contact with The Construction Specifier magazine. TCS covered the construction industry from my point of view. I was an architect who worked for other architects making their dreams come true. AIA's Architectural Record and the independent Progressive Architecture magazines offered me nothing that looked even remotely like what I dealt with every day.
In short, CSI seemed more in tune with my corner of the profession.”
Eric Murrell RA, CSI, CCS, CDT

“The great experience was right after my very first meeting. I touched on it in a Blog last month...https://www.csinext.org/the-artichoke-s-life/diversity
But the real value came shortly later, the networking experience...https://www.csinext.org/the-artichoke-s-life/trusted-advisor
